Once a Christian monastery, founded circa 235 CE, on the burial site of the Christian martyr, Menas of Alexandria. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1979, the foundations of the monastery and remnants of the town were attractive for Schutz Boy Scout exploration. Schutz boarder Joe Roode died climbing down a well on a Boy Scout outing at Abu Mena in 1961.
